Bringing Nordic engineering to China
SinoScan was founded in Denmark in 1998. The years prior to to the startup of SinoScan had seen the founders in charge of the establishment of a production facility in Eastern China on behalf of a large market-leading European company.
The lessons learnt from establishing a factory operation according to the highest Western standards in a Chinese context, were to become core ingredients in SinoScan’s management philosophy. At its inception, SinoScan’s core business was the timely, cost-efficient, and quality-compliant delivery of production input sourced in China to Western companies.
Important decisions were made early on that would have an effect on how SinoScan ensures it performance to this day: Business with both customers and suppliers was to be handled locally and by local people; the gaps in culture, language, management, and technical capabilities would be bridged internally by SinoScan and its people. Customers would engage with engineers from their home country on all issues from the first stages of documentation and production engineering through to everyday operations. And if, at the end of the day, something went wrong, the customer did not have to go China for answers.
By the same token, Chinese engineers at SinoScan’s expanding Shanghai operation were handling the management and development of a rapidly growing network of local suppliers. Chinese suppliers struggling with living up to or even understanding the requirements of their end-customers could engage with people that understood their challenges and were able to either help or apply pressure that yielded results instead of collapse.
This formula has helped SinoScan sustain an annual growth rate of 30 percent throughout its existence and has led to the establishment of SinoScan subsidiaries in China, the United States, Germany, UK, Denmark and Canada employing around 100 people worldwide. Today, building on experience gained over the last 15 years SinoScan is leveraging its people, processes and supplier network to deliver design and engineering services, production input and retail-ready products.
